🚨 Legislative Update: HB 4029 (Supplemental Retirement for Law Enforcement Officers in TRS) 🚨

We wanted to provide you with an important update regarding HB 4029, which addresses supplemental retirement benefits for law enforcement officers in TRS.

In a recent meeting with CLEAT, TPCA, UT System, and TAMU System, we learned that the House committee intends to vote the bill out of committee on Monday. However, there are ongoing discussions and concerns related to the financial aspects of the bill, including whether the funding would be made retroactive for current TRS members.

It’s important to note that the fiscal note on the bill has been updated, reflecting a higher cost than originally projected due to a correction from TRS on a previous miscalculation.

PLEASE ENSURE YOU ARE IN COMPLIANCE WITH YOUR COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY POLICIES AS IT RELATES TO CONTACTING THE LEGISLATURE.

Example letters are attached, however — given how quickly we need this to move — phone calls are better.

We are urging our members to contact your local State Representative and the members of the committee to express your support for HB 4029. Conversations with our labor partners indicate that if the bill does not move out of committee quickly, it risks dying on the calendar due to what they described as "floor chaos" in the current legislative session.
